Heritage & History
Cheyney University of Pennsylvania traces its origins to 1837, when it was founded as the African Institute through the vision and philanthropy of Richard Humphreys. Established to expand educational opportunity for people of African descent, the institution evolved into the Institute for Colored Youth and ultimately into what is now recognized as the nation’s oldest historically Black institution of higher education.
Across generations, the university has grown in scope and impact — expanding academic offerings, preparing educators and leaders, and continually adapting to meet the needs of students and society. Name changes reflecting this evolution culminated in the designation Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in 1983.
To strengthen and sustain this legacy, The Cheyney Foundation was established in 1971 as an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the university through private support. By raising and stewarding philanthropic gifts, the Foundation helps fund scholarships, academic initiatives, faculty development, and student programs that enhance the Cheyney experience.
Together, the University and Foundation represent a shared commitment to access, excellence, and opportunity — honoring a historic mission while investing in future generations.
